THE DARK AGES

An era of Earth’s history shrouded in mystery due to massive worldwide upheavals in government, a devastating World War, and eventually the release of the XY virus that virtually eliminated all males from the planet.  During this time few records were kept, and many of the ones that were kept have been lost.  Quite a bit is known about Human History from before this time period, but from about the end of the 21^st century to the beginning of the 24^th century very little is known.  What is known is that during that time the Earth’s total above sea level land mass shrunk from about 29% of the globe to about 15%.  It is currently at about 8%, but this was done artificially by piling up existing earth and sea bed sediment into concentrated population centers that are well above sea level, which also makes them far more comfortable in temperature.   Most island nations that exist now are built up far above the ocean, to protect the people from raging hurricanes and tidal waves.  (In fact no such disasters have occurred in any NWC nations in recorded memory.)  There are still a few small islands here and there that have beaches, but these are sparsely (if at all) populated and lie beyond the jurisdiction of the NWC.
