THE EQUATORIAL UNINHABITABLE ZONE
The
waters around the Equator are extremely hot, with an average temperature of 160
degrees during sunlit hours, and only dropping 10-30 degrees at night. This zone extends for 200 miles north and
south of the equator. At the equator
itself the waters are frequently beyond boiling point. Nothing lives at the Equator, and only
certain types of recently evolved mollusks and plankton can survive anywhere
within the EUZ. Special completely
enclosed water crafts have been designed to traverse the zone, but they are
expensive to charter voyages on, which encourages many people to simply remain
in the hemisphere in which they are born. Prior to the invention of these
special water crafts ships attempting to cross the “boiling line” would occasionally
break apart which invariably lead to a
horrific demise for all passengers aboard.
